SPF 50 for face: how to choose and when to reapply
SPF 50 offers protection from about 98% of UVB rays and is recommended for fair skin, high sun and prolonged outdoor exposure. For dermocosmetic facial care, the right pick depends on your skin type.
Chemical vs mineral filter
| Type | How it works | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Chemical (organic) | Absorbs UV rays | Everyday wear, light texture, no white cast |
| Mineral (physical) | Reflects UV rays | Sensitive skin, babies and kids, post-treatments |
Many modern formulas combine the two.
Choosing SPF for your skin type
- Dry skin — cream with hydrating ingredients (hyaluronic acid, glycerin).
- Oily / combination skin — fluid or gel with a mattifying finish.
- Sensitive skin — mineral filter, fragrance-free (Bioderma Photoderm Pediatric, Avène Mineral).
- Acne-prone skin — non-comedogenic, oil-free.
When and how much to apply
- Apply 2 mg/cm² — about half a teaspoon for the whole face.
- Apply 15–20 minutes before going out.
- Reapply every 2 hours in the sun, and immediately after swimming or sweating.
Is SPF needed in winter?
Yes. UV is lower in winter, but snow reflects up to 80% of UV. In the mountains and on clear-sky days, SPF is recommended.
Common mistakes
- Too little product — gives 2–3× lower actual protection than the label.
- Skipping reapplication — one morning cream isn't enough.
- Forgetting ears, neck and hands.
